Twenty Teams Attend Yosvani Garcia Showcase

Yosvani Garcia held a showcase for interested Major League clubs in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday and 20 teams were represented.

Four teams from Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball were present to watch the 26-year-old Cuban infielder/outfielder as well.

In parts of five seasons in Cuba's Serie Nacional, Garcia hit .280/.375/.352, showing little power to go with his speed but a contact-oriented approach (14.8 K%) and a respectable eye at the plate (9.3 BB%).

After opting out of his contract with Triple-A Durham, Grant Balfour is leaning towards retirement.

Balfour, 37, re-signed with the Tampa Bay Rays shortly after being released.

In 539.2 innings over 12 Major League seasons, the right-hander pitched to a 3.49 ERA with 571 strikeouts.

The Boston Red Sox announced on Monday afternoon that Allen Craig has cleared waivers and been outrighted.

Craig is no longer on Boston's 40-man roster. Had a team claimed him on waivers, they would have had to pay Craig the $25.2 million remaining on his contract. He is signed through the 2017 season.

Nieves opened the 2015 season as the backup catcher for the San Diego Padres, but he elected for free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment with the club.

Sources: Olivera Receives Visa, Headed To Los Angeles

Hector Olivera, who signed a six-year, $62.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in March, is expected to be in L.A. on Friday to finalize the contract by completing his physical, according to sources.

Olivera received his visa Monday morning.

The Cuban infielder could be begin working out at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz., sometime next week.

Varona is an athletic 27-year-old Cuban outfielder.

At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, Varona’s best tools are in the field, where he has above-average speed and arm strength with the ability to play all three outfield spots. While playing for Camaguey in Cuba, Varona’s best season came in 2012-13, when he batted .343/.406/.482 with 20 walks, 37 strikeouts and six home runs in 75 games. He also won a gold glove award that year.
